MusicFest Canada is celebrating its 40th annual festival in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre May 14-19, 2012. During the weeklong event MusicFest "The Nationals" will bring together more than 10,000 of Canada's finest young musicians 300 ensembles who will perform for recognition as the country's foremost musical ensembles. On Friday, May 18 the Festival will present a "40th Anniversary Celebration Concert" featuring guest artists from all over the Canada and the world.
The objectives of MusicFest Canada are:
- To provide an opportunity for students and educators from across Canada and elsewhere to meet and to demonstrate and to share their musical achievements and creativity.
- To evaluate and reflect on musical achievement and creativity in a constructive and educationally focused way.
- To encourage the study and performance of music written and arranged by Canadian composers.
- To complement and enhance the teaching, learning and growing process.
- To foster and promote a lifelong interest in music as a basic human experience.
- 40th Anniversary Celebration Concert hosted by former "Blood, Sweat and Tears" vocalist David Clayton-Thomas and featuring the Humber College Faculty Band, Pearl Drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez from "Santana", Yamaha pianist Oliver Jones, Jazz Vocalist Ranee Lee with Music Director Denny Christianson.
- 40th Anniversary Alumni Jazz Concert featuring the Nepean All-City Jazz Band directed by Neil Yorke-Slader, Alex Dean, Kirk MacDonald, Daniel Ko, Matthew Chalmers, Lucas Haneman and the National Youth Jazz Combo
- The National Arts Centre Orchestra featuring guest conductor Jose Luis Gomez with Percussionist Colin Currie
- The Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra with guest trombone soloist Dr. James Lebens, directed by Dr. Mark Hopkins and Dr. Gillian MacKay
- The Yamaha All-Star Band under the direction of Terry Promane
- Vocal Jazz group "Vertical Voices", from Los Angeles
- The Toronto Wind Orchestra under the Direction of Tony Gomes and featuring 13-year old Pearl flautist Zachary Kellog
- 40th Anniversary Choral Showcase featuring "Quintessential Vocal Ensemble" from St. John's Newfoundland and directed by Susan Quinn
- Daily Educoncerts featuring True North Brass, Capital Brassworks and the Musicfest Canada Jazz Educombo
- Up to $100,000 in scholarships and awards
- Daily workshops with reknowned clinicans including Chase Sanborn, Mark Ferguson, Al Kay and Kevin Warren.
